Toddlers are naturally inquisitive and love to learn. While there are plenty of hands-on activities and crafts you can do with your toddler, you may also wonder if you should introduce them to learning online.
If you are interested in online learning, one popular program is ABC Mouse.
The Basics of ABC Mouse
ABC Mouse is an online curriculum for children ages 2 to 6. There are 7 levels of learning:
- Toddler Time (for two year olds)
- Levels One and Two for three year olds at the preschool level
- Levels Three and Four for four year olds at the Pre-K level
- Levels Five and Six for five year olds at the kindergarten level
Across all levels, there are over 3,000 activities and 350 learning lessons.
You can pick different activities for your child to do, or you can follow a designated learning path.
If you follow the designated learning path (which I recommend), your child will have “environments” to complete, and within each “environment”, there are lessons. In the Toddler Time level, there are about 4 lessons in each environment and about four activities per lesson.
Topics covered include:
- Music and songs,
- Art and colors,
- World around us (science and social studies)
- Math, and
Each time a child completes an activity, she gets one or more tickets. These tickets can be redeemed for virtual items on the site such as accessories and clothes for the child’s avatar, or items for her virtual rooms, or for the virtual classroom’s fish tank.
Awards ABC Mouse Has Won
ABC Mouse has won several awards including Mom’s Choice Award, Parent’s Choice Gold Award, and Children’s Technology Editor’s Choice for Excellence in Design.
My Children’s Experience with ABC Mouse
I had two children who used ABC Mouse. My oldest used it from 4 to 6 years old and in that time went from level two through the end of the program. She loved the program, especially all of the math activities. Using the program also helped her learn her ABCs and some sight words. She was sad when she completed the program.
My younger daughter used the program from ages 2.5 to 4. At first, she did very good work, but then she got distracted by the virtual rewards and only did the work to get tickets to play more games and add to her hamster cage.
I’m signing her up for the program again after a break, but this time, I’m going to limit the amount of “fluff” she can do on the site and have her focus more on lessons.
How Much Does ABC Mouse Cost?
ABC Mouse is available for a free one month trial. After that, it costs $7.95 a month for up to three children. If you refer friends or family, you can get one month free for each referral.
